Giving Your Heart the Benefit of Five Years of Intensive Marathon Training

In only seven weeks…with no exercise!

Are even the usually effortless activities in life, like walking the dog or watering the garden, becoming challenging? If you suffer from angina or congestive heart failure, there’s an outpatient therapy treatment that relieves the symptoms and goes straight to the heart of the problem.

External Counterpulsation (ECP or EECP) therapy provides a safe, non-invasive treatment that delivers great clinical benefits for patients with angina and/or congestive heart failure. ECP treatment is typically provided on an outpatient basis in 35 one-hour sessions over a period of approximately seven weeks. Additional hours may be safely and effectively added to this standard regimen if the doctor’s evaluation of the patient’s response to treatment will result in greater relief of angina symptoms. In certain circumstances, adjusting the patient’s treatment regimen to two hours per day can make it more comfortable for the patient to complete a course of ECP therapy.

EECP is a unique Cardiac Therapy that delivers great benefits beyond the heart. The physical mechanism of External Counterpulsation Therapy delivers oxygenated blood to every vital organ of the body where blockage may exist. For instance, the arteries leading to your lungs, kidney, liver, brain, and to those in your outer extremities. This mechanical force of increasing oxygenated blood flow has documented proven improvement in patients with diabetes, vascular erectile dysfunction, Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s disease, peripheral vascular disease, movement disorders, kidney dysfunction, memory loss, stroke, diabetic retinopathy and dementia that is vascular in origin.

How Does the Process Work?

Simply put, ECP therapy restores pathways for adequate and necessary blood flow back to the heart through vessels that already exist! To receive ECP therapy, the patient reclines on a treatment table. Three sets of comfortable, inflatable cuffs (similar to blood pressure cuffs) are snugly and securely wrapped around the patient’s calves, thighs, and buttocks. While the heart is at rest, the cuffs are inflated sequentially, increasing the blood supply to the arteries that feeding the heart muscle. Before the next heart beat, all the cuffs simultaneously deflate, decreasing the amount of work the heart must perform.

ECP Benefits—Beyond the Heart

This popular, low-cost therapy has proven to be useful in the treatment of heart attacks (myocardial infarction), cardiogenic shock, angina and congestive heart failure.  Clinical experience indicates that patients have demonstrated improvement after ECP treatment, such as:

  • Less recurrent chest pain
  • Less ventricular fibrillation
  • Reduction or elimination of shock symptoms
  • Decrease in heart size
  • Less progression to cardiac failure
  • Afterload reduction
  • Increased quality of life
  • Improved oxygenated blood flow to other vital organs
  • Decreased mortality rates
